You don't need a million-dollar cleaning business
Scroll for five minutes and you'll find someone selling a course on building a million-dollar cleaning business. Big numbers, fast timelines, lots of screenshots.
Let's be real: most cleaning businesses never hit six figures. So why are we all chasing seven?
What the million-dollar pitch leaves out
A million in revenue isn't a million in your pocket. It usually means multiple crews, managers, office staff, vehicles, insurance, and a lot more things that can go wrong. Some owners love that. Many find they've built a bigger, more stressful job.
None of that is wrong. It just isn't the only definition of success, and it's rarely the right first goal.
Six figures first
For most cleaning businesses, the next real milestone is steady six figures with healthy profit. That's where your life starts to change. And the steps to get there aren't flashy:
- Price for profit, so every job pays you and your team
- Build recurring revenue, so your income is predictable
- Know your numbers every week
- Get help with the cleaning, so the business doesn't depend on your body
- Automate the busywork, so you get your evenings back
At Brightside, 95 percent of our revenue comes from recurring residential clients. It isn't glamorous. It's steady, and steady is what lets you plan your life.
Define your own "enough"
Burnout in this industry is real, physically and emotionally. A lot of it comes from chasing someone else's version of success. So ask yourself:
- What does "enough" income look like for me?
- How many hours do I actually want to work each week?
- Which parts of the work do I love, and which drain me?
- What would I do with more time back?
Your answers are your business plan. Maybe that's a small, profitable team. Maybe it's never scrubbing another shower. Maybe it is a million dollars someday. The point is that you choose.
Build the business around your life
Too many owners build a business and then try to squeeze a life around it. Flip it. Decide what you want your days to look like, then build the business that supports that. It's slower to brag about online, but it's a lot easier to live with.
